What the Buddha Taught

The Buddha taught tranquility and insight – in that order.

Achieving tranquility in any and all situations requires practice. Beginning centuries ago in Buddhist monasteries, time honored training techniques have been handed down that give us access to our original nature - the precision and intelligence found when we are able to sustain attention on the present moment.

“Joriki” is a Japanese word that translates as the ability to put our mind where we want it, when we want it, for as long as we want it.

When you weigh thoughts, follow thoughts, or suppress thoughts, you are off somewhere in your mind and not here. Here is where the truth lies, the rest is fabrication and delusion. Great Zen Master Lin Chi said, “Be Master wherever you go, then wherever you are, things are as they truly are.” The truth that pierces past, present and future does not change. Silence and stillness of the mind cannot appear if we are mentally commenting on people, events, situations, and conditions. Commenting causes all sorts of emotional responses. “Silent awareness of the present moment” is the goal or aspiration. At the Zen Center of Las Vegas you will learn to like the silence more than the words, noise, and the emotional content they produce inside your head.
