When we maintain poise and equanimity, not only during meditation but also in
mobile states – such as walking, working, exercising, etc. remaining patient and
calm regardless of circumstance, the Great Way will most certainly manifest
unerringly. Without distinctions, without judgements, without opinions, the words
and thoughts that occupy your mind from morning til evening will slow down
considerably. Your mind will become quieter and quieter. Your previous incessant
need to either grasp or reject will slow down considerably having minimal
influence over your day to day affairs.

Hui Neng’s oft repeated excerpt from the Diamond Sutra “Abiding nowhere,
wisdom mind arises” will take on a new significance. Since all thoughts are
ephemeral, why then cling to this empty phenomena? How freeing it is to be
unpretentious and empty, accumulated habits no longer an influence.
Sincere practice of the methods that have been consistently reference in this
space such as bowing, sitting, chanting, mantra, and breath counting, will become
the cement foundation for all our activities. Prior to any method is the conscious
relaxation of the body. Begin there. Start with a scan from head to toe noting all
the places where involuntary tension arises in the body. Do this when you first sit
to meditate or for that matter prior to engaging any activity. We cannot always do
breath counting and/or breath regulation, bowing or mantra. What we can do for
instance in all circumstances is to take a deep breath and consciously release all
tension.

Tranquil and cool, the ability to lead a life of contentment will manifest
accordingly..
